Our Curriculum
Curriculum Intent
At Gedney Church End Primary Academy, we believe that every child deserves a rich, ambitious and inclusive education that enables them to thrive academically, socially and personally. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that all children develop the knowledge, skills, vocabulary and understanding they need to become confident learners, responsible citizens and successful individuals who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond primary school.
At the heart of our curriculum is a commitment to ensuring that every child can read, write and communicate effectively, as we recognise that strong literacy skills unlock learning across all subjects. Reading is central to our curriculum and we strive to develop fluent, enthusiastic readers who read both for pleasure and to learn. Through exposure to high-quality texts, rich language experiences and purposeful opportunities to speak, listen, read and write, children develop the vocabulary, confidence and cultural awareness needed to engage successfully with the wider curriculum.
Alongside English, we believe that mathematics provides children with the essential knowledge and understanding needed to make sense of the world around them. We aim for every child to become a confident, fluent and resilient mathematician who can reason mathematically, solve problems and apply their learning to a range of contexts. Through carefully sequenced learning and high expectations for all, children build secure mathematical understanding from their earliest experiences through to the end of Key Stage 2.
Our wider curriculum is broad, balanced and ambitious. Through Science, History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, Computing, Music, Religion and Worldviews, PSHE, Relationships and Sex Education and French in Key Stage 2, children develop a deepening understanding of themselves, their communities and the wider world. We want children to be curious about the past, informed about the present and excited about the future. Through studying significant people, places, events, cultures and ideas, children broaden their horizons and develop the knowledge that will help them flourish in modern Britain and an increasingly interconnected world.
The curriculum is carefully structured so that children build on prior learning over time. Knowledge and skills are sequenced progressively from EYFS through to Year 6, enabling children to revisit important concepts, strengthen understanding and make meaningful connections between new and existing learning. As they move through the academy, children encounter increasingly sophisticated subject content and are encouraged to think critically, ask questions, investigate, reason, create, evaluate and explain their ideas with growing independence and confidence.
We recognise that learning is strongest when children can apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts. Therefore, where appropriate, purposeful links are made across subjects to deepen understanding and enrich learning. These connections help children recognise the relevance of their learning while maintaining the integrity and disciplinary knowledge of individual subjects. Through these experiences, children learn to transfer skills, make informed decisions and develop a greater appreciation of the interconnected nature of knowledge.
Above all, our curriculum is designed to inspire. We want children to leave Gedney Church End Primary Academy with a love of learning, a sense of curiosity about the world, confidence in their own abilities and the knowledge, character and aspirations required to achieve success in the next stage of their education and throughout their lives.
