PE
At Gedney Church End Primary Academy, we believe that Physical Education plays an important role in helping children to become healthy, active, confident and resilient individuals. We want every child to enjoy being physically active, experience success and develop positive attitudes towards sport and exercise.
Our ambition is for children to recognise the importance of physical activity for their physical health, mental wellbeing and enjoyment, while developing the knowledge, skills and confidence that will help them remain active throughout their lives.
Our Curriculum
Our PE curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their physical competence, confidence and understanding through a broad range of activities. Children develop fundamental movement skills, including agility, balance and coordination, and learn to apply their developing skills with increasing control, accuracy and confidence.
As children progress through the academy, they are encouraged to build upon what they already know and can do, develop greater control of their movements and apply their skills in increasingly challenging situations. They learn that improvement comes through practice, feedback, perseverance and a willingness to challenge themselves.
We want children not simply to participate in PE, but to understand how to improve, make decisions and apply what they have learned with increasing confidence and independence.
Learning Through Physical Activity
High-quality PE is about more than developing physical skills. Children learn to work independently and collaboratively, communicate effectively, follow rules, make decisions and respond positively to challenge.
They are encouraged to recognise what they do well, identify how they can improve and develop the resilience to keep practising when something is difficult. Through this, PE provides valuable opportunities for children to develop confidence, teamwork, leadership and responsibility alongside their physical competence.
Participation and Inclusion
We believe that PE is for every child. Children have different starting points, strengths and experiences, and our aim is for everyone to participate meaningfully, experience success and make progress.
Teaching and activities are adapted where appropriate to provide the right balance of support and challenge. We want children to develop the self-belief to participate, the confidence to try something new and the determination to improve, recognising that success in physical activity can take many different forms.
Healthy and Active Lives
We want children to understand why being physically active matters. Through PE and wider opportunities for physical activity, children develop their understanding of how exercise contributes to physical health and mental wellbeing and why developing healthy habits is important both now and in later life.
Our ambition extends beyond PE lessons. We want children to discover activities they enjoy and develop positive attitudes towards physical activity that encourage them to choose to be active throughout their lives.
Competition, Teamwork and Fair Play
Children experience opportunities to collaborate and compete, learning to apply their skills individually and as part of a team. They develop an understanding of rules, fairness and sporting behaviour and learn to respond appropriately to both success and disappointment.
We want children to understand that achievement in PE is not simply about winning. It is also about personal improvement, determination, teamwork, fair play and striving to achieve your best.
PE and Our SPARK Values
Our SPARK values are particularly evident within PE.
Self-belief gives children the confidence to participate, try new activities and recognise what they can achieve. Perseverance helps them to practise, respond to challenge and continue when something feels difficult. Aspiration encourages every child to challenge themselves and strive for their personal best.
Respect and Kindness are developed through teamwork, fair play, encouragement and consideration for others. Children learn to celebrate not only their own achievements but also the effort and success of those around them.
Beyond the PE Lesson
We want children to have opportunities to be active, participate and discover activities they enjoy beyond curriculum PE. Through wider physical activity, extracurricular opportunities and competitive sport, children can broaden their experiences, develop new interests and represent their academy.
These experiences help children recognise that physical activity can take many different forms and that sport and exercise can provide enjoyment, friendship, challenge and a sense of achievement.
